week seven: ciao firenze, hola barcelona!

23/24 October 2009

Barcelona… Okay, so traveling is a wonderful thing… but note to self? Make sure to write down the address of the place you’re staying before you get there… and don’t travel somewhere you’ve never been without a map at midnight, with a large suitcase, and bad directions…

It was pouring rain on the way to the train station, but neither K nor I let the weather dampen our spirits, we were on our way to Barcelona!!!

Once on the train, it was hurry up and wait… finally we pulled into the Pisa station, had to find a tram to the airport (which we almost missed), once at the airport, we ran to check-in, only to find our carry on (which we were sharing) was overweight, so the two of us stood in the middle of the line, pulling sweaters and shoes out and stuffing them into our already over-stuffed backpacks… Once checked in, and through security, we ran to our gate with 5 min to spare… but our flight was delayed… by 2hrs… hurry up and wait… ugh.

While that sounds like an incredibly pessimistic way to begin an 11-day European adventure, everything turned out quite well… K and I found the ever-so-entrancing hostel around 2am, climbed the stairs to the unmarked hostel, and checked in… I know youth hostels have a rather dubious reputation, but this truly was a bio-hazard… the bathroom would not have passed health inspections in a third world country, and the bed room (already occupied by 22 other inhabitants) had funky smell that managed to permeate our suitcase (and linger for the rest of the trip, much to K and my extreme displeasure…)

As soon as we woke up in the morning, we opted for alternative lodging, picked up our bags, and left (literally, just left… no makeup, still in yoga pants and a sweatshirt…) on our way there, this is what we saw in the metro... it's completely inconsequential, but I found it hilarious... a much needed laugh...

Once in our new accommodations, K and I took a much needed nap, showered, and at last breathed a sigh of relief… after the past 24hrs, we were both ecstatic to have gotten everything ironed out, and to at last be in Barcelona… which we celebrated by going to a museum!

Rather than waste an entire day, we hopped on the metro and headed to the Picasso Museu, which was amazing. And then, found some much needed food (neither one of us had given a thought to food until we both realized we hadn’t had anything since dinner in the airport the night before!) which was possibly the best food I’ve eaten in a while… I couldn’t tell if it was from exhaustion, hunger, or thanks to the chef, but that was some goooood food!!!

First day in Barcelona? muy loco, pero vale la pena la espera! :)
